Benefit from making the company way evident in your training

In the musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Trying, there is a song called, The Company Way. It reeks of mindless workers churning to the rhythym of the boss’s drum in order to earn that watch after 25 years labor.

When employees provide consistent great services or products, business wins.

I don’t view the “company way” in that way any longer. Now I see it in light of companies like Zappos and Apple – both icons of superior performance; one in customer service, the other in creativity and innovation. There is a consistency to the company/customer relationship. I can see the smile on the Zappos customer service person’s face if i have occasion to reach out and touch them. Likewise, I smile every time I see my less-than-tech-savvy husband turn on the Mac because he has yet (after 5 years) to crash it or get so frustrated he could toss it out the window.

That sort of great reputation and consistent performance in the eyes of the customer doesn’t happen by accident. It is created by a culture, a set of beliefs and expectations and through training.

Training? Absolutely, yes. Customized training embeds culture and core values from the very first orientation modules and throughout all additional training programs. When supervisors and managers support the training and demand implementation, then a consistency in performance is created. Everyone doing something the same way simplifies the expectations in the workplace and gives rise to meeting the demands and expectations of customers. Great service does not have to be sporadic, it can be standard operating procedure – and the company way.

The company way doesn’t necessarily mean drudgery or a hum-drum existence. Quite the opposite. Innovation can be part of the company way as can fun and excellence. It is what you create, implement and use as the focus.

Whatever way you want your company to be and however you want it to function, training and implementation is a key component to making it happen.
